The Automobile Club of Southern California (ACSC) pioneered the placing of traffic signs along the roads of So. Cal. and beyond. Beginning in the early 1900's till about the early 1960's when most signage was then done by government agencies. The signs were porcelain coated steel and lasted for many decades unlike our present signs that are painted aluminum and have a short life span in comparison.
